Academic Mentors are individually assigned to first-year seminars and work as a group on academic leadership, teaching pedagogies, and discussions about the college experience for incoming students. Using the content and classroom of the first year seminars as a context, this 300-level course provides students with the opportunity to learn about and practice academic leadership skills ranging from teaching and tutoring to holistic student development. Students will be expected to complete FYS course readings over the summer, before the course begins. During the semester, students will participate actively in class and typically organize and evaluate the final public “Showcase” presentation. In addition to August training before Orientation, Academic Mentors will meet periodically as a group outside of their individual seminars throughout the semester in order to continue mentor training and reflect upon their mentor experience.
