The Psychopathology course provides an in-depth introduction to the study of abnormal behavior and mental disorders through the framework of psychopathology. Students will learn how to define, identify, and analyze psychological disorders, with particular attention to the concepts of psychological dysfunction, distress, and atypical cultural responses. The course will be structured around the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), offering a systematic overview of major diagnostic categories.

An integrated approach will be adopted, highlighting the interaction of cultural, social, biological, and developmental factors in the onset and maintenance of psychological disorders. Topics will include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, eating disorders, sexual and gender-related disorders, psychotic disorders, and disorders of childhood and adolescence.

Throughout the course, students will critically engage with psychological theories and empirical research, gaining both a conceptual understanding and a practical perspective on psychopathology. Emphasis will also be placed on the real-world implications of diagnosis, treatment, and the ethical issues surrounding mental health care.
