As of Fall 2023, the Office of Student Life has reconfigured the ambiguous role traditionally known as "sober monitors" in an effort to: 

  • Clarify the role and responsibility of students monitoring events at which alcohol is actively available, 
  • Rename the role to Event Hosts to avoid the implication that events at which there is alcohol are out of control and that anyone not in this role is not or should not be sober, 
  • Develop a brief training for students interested in helping students be safe at student organization events, and
  • Ensure that student organization officers and Event Hosts are clear on what the role is and what it is not.

Students who have completed the training and the agreement with the OSL are listed as a part of a corps of trained individuals who may be invited by student organization officers to serve as an Event Host. 

The Event Hosts may not consume alcohol or drugs before, during, or immediately after an event they are supporting. They: 

  • Ensure that participants are not consuming an unsafe amount of alcohol to the best of their ability,
  • Tend bar or otherwise monitor the distribution of alcohol approved in advance by the Office of Student Life,
  • Monitor behavior and safety at the event, and
  • Respond to get the appropriate help in the event an individual is a threat to themselves, others, or the success of the event.

The benefits of volunteering as an Event Host are: 

  • Free admission to an event at which they are serving as an Event Host (covered by the student organization hosting the event),
  • Leadership experience on campus, and
  • Being of service to other students and the Franklin community.
